Photograph: Glyn Kirk/AFP/Getty Images

Andrew Andronikou, the Portsmouth administrator, believes the club will celebrate a "watershed" moment if Balram Chainrai's proposed takeover at Fratton Park is approved by the Football League next Thursday.

Chanrai, a Hong Kong-based businessman, could become Portsmouth's owner for the second time if the governing body accept his offer to take the club out of administration.

Andronikou said: "The board will sit to decide whether to approve Mr Chainrai's takeover and whether the club's golden share in the league should be transferred to his company or not.

"I hope they say yes. They absolutely should do. But everything about this club has been like pushing a cart up a hill. But if it goes through it will be watershed. I can see blue sky ahead, the club will effectively be out of administration and out of the clutches of the Football League. It will then be down to the management and current board and playing staff."

Andronikou believes Portsmouth will effectively be out of administration by the end of March: "That's when the first payment of £3m is due. If Mr Chainrai becomes the new owner he will have to pay the amount by then. Under the terms of the Company Voluntary Agreement, nine months after it was agreed, the current company that owns Portsmouth will be no more, the CVA ends, and Mr Chainrai's new company takes over under a sale-and-purchase-agreement, which states he must pay the balance of around £13m over the next four years."

Andronikou added that Portsmouth will look to add to a skeletal squad once Wednesday's loan-window opens.

"All non-Premier League clubs can take players on loan," he said. "We can only register 20 players under the terms of our embargo due to our financial situation. Ricardo Rocha [the Portuguese defender] should become Steve Cotterill's 20th, as we have agreed terms.

"But there will be loans. For example Kyle Naughton, the Tottenham right-back, should join once Wednesday's window opens."

The Republic of Ireland winger was due to move to Fratton Park along with David Kitson as part of the deal that saw Marc Wilson move to the Britannia Stadium.

The move was not completed before 5pm last Thursday, but with the international break he has not missed any games for Portsmouth. He could join them as early as Wednesday.

"We're disappointed that this transfer hasn't gone through. The aim now is to ensure we arrive at the same point for both clubs and the player who had made up his mind up to join Portsmouth," said Tony Scholes, chief executive of Stoke.

"That will probably take the form of a loan move until the end of the year and then Liam would finalise his permanent move to Fratton Park in the January window."

Portsmouth also expect to sign the right-back Kyle Naughton on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Sentinel says Lawrence could still be a Stoke City player amid fears his transfer to Portsmouth didn't go through in time on deadline day.

That would leave Lawrence returning to the Britannia - but unable to play as Stoke have already declared their 25-man squad.

It is believed that Portsmouth lodged the paperwork for his transfer 15 minutes too late for it to be registered by the FA and Premier League.

Discussions are still taking place between Portsmouth and football's top brass to find a loophole.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- A woman from Columbus, Ohio, and two women from St. Petersburg, Fla., were arrested and charged with two felonies each following a routine traffic stop on U.S. 23 near 11th Street in Portsmouth at approximately 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4.

Patricia M. Yantis, 38, of Columbus, and Natalie S. Blake, 32, and Kenya B. Washington, 33, both of St. Petersburg, were each charged with possession of OxyContin and possession of Xanax, after officers stopped the 2010 Ford Focus, driven by Yantis, for making an improper turn.

According to a release from the Ohio State Highwa Patrol, a search of the vehicle was performed after marijuana was discovered to be in the possession of one of the passengers. The search revealed 100 OxyContin 30 mg pills and 60 Xanax pills in the trunk of the vehicle.

All three subjects were incarcerated at the Scioto County Jail.

Former Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie played no part in the club's summer transfer deals, insists current incumbent David Lampitt.

There had been reports circulating on the South Coast that Storrie had helped to broker the agreement which saw Marc Wilson head for Stoke and Dave Kitson and Liam Lawrence move in the opposite direction.

Lampitt, though, claims that was not the case, with Storrie no longer part of the decision-making team at Fratton Park.

Lampitt told The News: "Andrew was at the club along with myself and Steve. We were all across all of it. Certain people lead on certain deals.

"But nobody else from outside the club was involved. Myself, Andrew and Steve were involved in everything."

There had also been suggestions that the trio had become embroiled in heated debates regarding player movement, and Lampitt admits things could have run smoother.

He said: "There were no different agendas but that's not to say that we all necessarily agreed on all of the details of every deal.

"I'm not sure a manager ever wants to lose players. But it's a difficult balance to strike. You have to balance the needs of the football side with the needs of the financial side of the club.

"Sometimes you have to take decisions that may not make both sides entirely happy. But you try to get the balance right overall - and with the deals that were completed - I think we have done that.

"Probably everyone would rather have kept our squad intact and just added to it. But that was not realistic given the situation we find ourselves in."

Blackpool had agreed a fee with Pompey for Nugent, 25, but were unable to locate him as the transfer deadline closed in.

"If the player hadn't gone missing we'd have had David Nugent. With 20 minutes to go we had Nugent signed on, but no one could locate him, so he couldn't sign his contract and it all fell through," Ian Holloway, the Seasiders manager, told the Blackpool Gazette.

"So that's one that wriggled out of the net, but it happens. I thought he was one that was worth trying to get, so because of that we put some other deals on hold.

"Nugent was the main one we targeted. We didn't miss many, but unfortunately that was one we did and it wasn't possible to get a back-up with 20 minutes left."

Leeds United are giving a trial to the Senegalese midfielder Amdy Faye, who is a free agent having been released by Stoke City in the summer.

He has been training with the club and will feature for their reserves against Grimsby Town's second string on Tuesday night.
